Hope And Help For Fibromyalgia Sufferers   by Tom Sample

Characterized by joint and soft tissue pain and extreme fatigue, Fibromyalgia Syndrome is a chronic illness that can really sideline a life. It is unfortunately not very well understood by the medical community and people as a whole, but studies are ongoing to unlock more information about this troublesome condition. In time, it is hoped with more understanding a cure or at least better treatments will be found. Until then, those afflicted will have to deal with the symptoms as best they can as they arise.

This does not mean those who suffer must do so alone. The medical community has recognized this condition and teams of professionals can and do help many sufferers endure the daily rigors of the illness. Seeking medical help and learning what can be done in the self-help arena can make a real difference for patients.

Fibromyalgia itself is a chronic condition that generally manifests itself in musculoskeletal pain. It can impact the ligaments, tendons and muscles of the entire body. Generally those with the illness say they ache all over, feel sore and stiff. Fatigue is often strong in those with this condition.

Unfortunately, those symptoms are not the only ones that go along with the condition. Sleep problems, stiffness, irritable bowel syndrome and more have also been reported in conjunction with the illness.

With millions of sufferers in the United States alone, the chronic condition can strike anyone of any age and background. It does strike children and the elderly, but it is more likely to hit women in their prime.

Those with fibromyalgia often suffer alone. Since the condition doesn't manifest with visible symptoms, such as inflammation, it is hard for others to understand what the patient is going through. During initial diagnosis many patients even report family and friends were unsure if they were telling the truth or not. In reality, the syndrome behaves a lot like a constant flu. The patient aches, is in pain and is extremely tired.

Although there is no known cure for the affliction, there are promising treatments available. Drug therapy can help with pain issues and vitamin shots and other things may help with the fatigue. Study continues to find ways to better help those with the condition deal with its debilitating effects.

Finding out if a person has fibromyalgia can be a frustrating process as well. Since there is no singular test for the condition, other illnesses such as arthritis and lupus must first be ruled out. Once a diagnosis is firm though, a team of medical professionals can work to help the patient lead a relatively normal life by managing the condition.

Doctors a typical fibromyalgia patient might want to see include a rheumatologist, neurologist, dentist, pain management specialist and more. The way the condition is handled now is by tackling each major symptom as it arises. There is no holistic cure, but there are ways to deal.

Proper diet and outside support are also important for dealing with this condition. Patients do better when they have assistance and make a conscious decision to fight back by gaining proper care and doing what they can to lessen symptom strength.

Few medical conditions are more misunderstood and more difficult to deal with on a regular basis. Despite this, those with fibromyalgia can do things to make their daily life more comfortable. With proper care and determination, those who suffer can go about daily activities, generally without too much difficulty. Some however may suffer symptoms so strong that disability is the only option.
